A defeated boss is sealed into Rose's tarot deck as an Arcana granting its spell and special action, then three Works of Mercy, a Blessing and a Gift.
Castlevania Arcana System in Belmont's Curse Explained
Castlevania Arcana are tarot cards you earn by beating bosses. Kill a boss, it is sealed into Rose's tarot deck and becomes an Arcana handing you that boss's own spell plus a unique special action. Each card then carries up to three Works of Mercy - small tasks - that unlock Blessings, and assigning a Blessing unlocks a Gift that changes the spell. Four layers: boss, Arcana, Works of Mercy, Blessing, Gift.
This page separates what Konami and PlayStation have published from what only turned up in preview coverage. As of the 2026-10-05 demo, the total number of Arcana and the full card list are unannounced.
The Four Layers of the Arcana System, Confirmed and Not
| Layer | What it is | Source naming it | Public demo status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boss defeated | The fight; bosses are also the loot source | Konami, PlayStation Blog | One boss: The Fallen |
| Sealed into the deck | The boss is shut into Rose's tarot card and becomes an Arcana | Konami site, PlayStation Blog | Happens after The Fallen |
| Arcana loadout | Grants the boss's spell and a unique special action | Konami site, PlayStation Blog | One spell usable |
| Works of Mercy | Up to three specific tasks per Arcana | PlayStation Blog | Task list visible in game |
| Blessing | Unlocked by finishing a Work of Mercy; improves the Arcana | PlayStation Blog | Unlocked after completing one |
| Gift | Unlocked by assigning a Blessing; bonus upgrade to the spell | PlayStation Blog | Assignable once earned |
| Full roster | How many Arcana exist and who owns each | Nobody | Not announced |
Layer 1: Beating a Boss Seals It Into Rose's Tarot Deck
Konami's site states it under "Diverse Bosses and the Arcana System": bosses are "sealed into Rose's tarot cards, turning them into Arcana - use their skills to cast spells and obtain unique special actions."
Official source: Castlevania: Belmont's Curse official website (Konami, Game System section)
PlayStation's July 2026 hands-on report puts it the same way from a real session: each boss "gets merged into Rose's tarot deck, turning them into Arcana which unlocks spells, skills, and special actions." Bosses sometimes drop a weapon too, Joan's Burnt Sword of Fierbois among them.
The deck is not UI dressing: that hands-on describes Rose's chest scar as "visually represented by her tarot deck," beside the red curse running from her elbow to her hand.

Layer 2: The Three Arcana Anyone Can Name
Only three Arcana have been named in published material - the entire roster as of 2026-10-05.
| Arcana | Named where | What it does | Boss it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holy Cross | PlayStation Blog, IGN preview | The boss's own attack, kept as a spell | The Fallen |
| Holy Light | PlayStation Blog | Hold L2 to pass through solid Chaos Shards; timed press deflects attacks | Joan of Arc |
| Cursed Flame | PlayStation Blog | Its fireball is the example for a Gift upgrade | Not stated |
Rose Belmont, Trevor Belmont and the announced bosses, with their confirmed English voice actors, are on our characters and voice cast page.
Holy Cross shows the design rule cleanly: the move The Fallen "repeatedly bludgeoned" you with becomes yours once you have tamed him. IGN calls the resulting spell a boomerang, and in preview play it damages enemies it passes through before returning to Rose after a set distance or a wall.
Holy Light proves the special action is not always damage - a traversal key and a timed deflect, covered on our Arcana Whip and Anchor page.
Wiki farms list full Arcana sets for this game. Konami has published three names. Treat every other card name and drop location as unverified until launch.
Layer 3: Works of Mercy Are the Grind Behind the Card
A Work of Mercy is a specific task attached to one Arcana. PlayStation's wording: each Arcana has "up to three Works of Mercy, a specific task to be completed like hitting an enemy five times with its spell, which then unlocks a Blessing to improve it."
IGN's preview lists the three concrete tasks shown on the Holy Cross card:
| Work of Mercy on Holy Cross | Task type |
|---|---|
| Find three different whip-type weapons | Collection |
| Kill five enemies with one Holy Cross throw | Spell usage |
| Kill 10 enemies with a whip attack | Weapon usage |
Two things follow. The tasks follow how you play - a spell card can demand melee weapon use - and the "five times" wording is a simplification; in-game tasks carry their own counts.
The Holy Cross list is the one set you can open in the public demo. Whether the demo's Cestus gauntlets count toward the whip-type task is unsettled - the Cestus route is the closest answer.
Layer 4: Blessings Are Points, Gifts Are What You Choose
The last layer turns the card from a trophy into a build choice. PlayStation closes the chain: a Blessing unlocks once a Work of Mercy is done, and it "comes with an unlockable bonus 'Gift' once you assign it - for example, the Cursed Flame's fireball can be enhanced to become bigger and pack a heavier pushback."
IGN adds the mechanics layer - a completed Work of Mercy grants a point, and points buy upgrades for that specific Arcana. For the Holy Cross the options it lists change how the spell plays: two crosses at once, extra damage the further the cross travels, or a partial mana refund per enemy hit when you catch it on the return.
Arcana Are Not Weapons and Not Relics
| Track | Source | Role | Slots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcana | Defeating a boss | Spells and special actions, improved via Works of Mercy | One at a time, swapped in the equipment menu |
| Weapons | Drops, including boss drops like Joan's Burnt Sword of Fierbois | Melee movesets; seven categories, each with its own style and special move | Combat loadout |
| Relics | Found in the world | Passive bonuses; the Crypt Key restores health and mana on every chest opened | Up to three |
The Arcana track is the only one gated behind a named enemy. Everything else is in the weapons and relics guide.

Konami says demo save data transfers to the full game due October 15, 2026, on the same platform and account with the demo save kept. It has not said whether an unlocked Arcana or an assigned Blessing survives, so do not plan around it. The demo guide covers the opening chapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Arcana in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse? A tarot card created when you defeat a boss, sealed into Rose's deck, granting that boss's spell plus a unique special action.
How do I get Arcana? By defeating bosses. The demo has exactly one, The Fallen, and his card is Holy Cross.
How many Works of Mercy does each Arcana have? Up to three, per PlayStation's hands-on. Each is a specific task, such as hitting enemies with that Arcana's spell.
What is the difference between a Blessing and a Gift? A Blessing unlocks when you finish a Work of Mercy. Assigning it unlocks the Gift, the upgrade that changes the spell - a bigger fireball with heavier pushback is the published example.
Is Cursed Flame an Arcana? It is named as the example of a Gift, implying it is an Arcana spell. No source attributes it to a boss.
Does the tarot deck replace older Castlevania holy symbols? That is this game's own system. Konami describes Belmont's Curse as a 2D action-exploration game, not a remake, and mechanics from earlier entries do not carry into it.
Can I unlock every Arcana in the demo? No. The public demo covers the opening chapter with one boss, so one Arcana is available. Press previews of an earlier build showed more, but that is not in the downloadable demo.
Will my Arcana carry into the full game? Konami says demo saves transfer, on the same platform and account, with the demo save kept. How much Arcana progress comes with it is unstated.
