How the Arcane Whip grapple, golden and purple Anchors, wall jumps and Chaos Shards work in the demo - the movement system that gates most secrets.
Castlevania Arcana Whip and Anchor Traversal in the Demo
You do not start the demo with the whip. Rose picks up the Arcana Whip grapple after beating The Fallen in the sewers, and from then on the right trigger is both attack and transport - it latches onto Anchors, swings you across gaps and chains into an instant strike. Golden and purple Anchors both work, one Anchor in the Sewer Reservoir stays invisible until you whip straight up into empty space, and wall jumps plus the dodge-and-slide cover everything else. Chaos Shards and any double jump belong to later progression: passing Shards needs Joan's Holy Light Arcana, and Joan is not in the demo.
Everything below is based on the demo as of 2026-10-05, plus Konami's material and PlayStation's pre-release hands-on.
| Move | PS5 input | What it does | Where you can use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcana Whip grapple | R2 | Latch an Anchor or enemy, swing gaps, chain an instant attack | Demo, from The Fallen onward |
| Anchor swing | R2 while latched | Pendulum between golden and purple Anchors | Demo |
| Dodge and slide | Circle | Slide under attacks; double tap to flip backwards | Demo and full game |
| Wall jump | Input not published | Climb vertical walls; the hands-on pairs it with spike gaps | Confirmed in the game; demo reach not documented |
| Spell / heal | Triangle / L1 | Cast an Arcana spell, restore health; both cost mana | Demo (spells need an Arcana) |
| Chaos Shard pass-through | Hold L2 with Joan's Holy Light | Walk through solid Shards | Full game only |
| Double jump | Not assigned | Hinted at, never confirmed | Not available |
The Arcana Whip button map, and why you will see it spelled two ways
PlayStation's hands-on is the cleanest published description of the kit: dodge and slide on Circle, a double tap to flip backwards, and the Arcana Whip grapple on R2 "can be chained into an instant attack or traversal swing". Mana powers Triangle spells and L1 healing, and refills by defeating enemies rather than pickups - so a room you clear feeds the spells that open the next door.
Official source: Castlevania: Belmont's Curse hands-on report (PlayStation Blog, July 17, 2026)
On spelling: PlayStation's report says Arcana Whip, Rock Paper Shotgun's demo guide writes Arcane Whip, and Konami's character page does not name Rose's whip at all - she "wields a variety of weapons in addition to her whip", while Trevor carries the legendary Vampire Killer. Search one spelling, find nothing, try the other.
The full button map, including the L2 Arcana action and the custom difficulty sliders, is on our controls and difficulty page.
Latching on and immediately attacking is a repositioning tool, not just damage: the follow-up hit carries Rose through the target and re-seats her on the far side.
Golden and purple Anchors: what is actually different
Both Anchor colours latch and both swing. Rock Paper Shotgun, writing after playing the demo, says you "can latch onto golden and purple Anchors and swing back and forth, letting you reach out-of-the-way platforms and latch onto enemies". Swing is not a one-shot animation - you build momentum across anchors instead of re-aiming from a standstill.
| Anchor | Confirmed behaviour | Where it matters | Demo status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Anchor | Latch and swing; reach platforms off the main path | The Sewer Reservoir route | Present |
| Purple Anchor | Latch and swing; same stated use as golden | Same rooms | Present |
| Hidden Anchor | Invisible until the whip is aimed straight up above a grate platform in the Sewer Reservoir | Opens the Cestus chest route | Present, missable |
| Anchors outside the demo | Not described | Unknown | Unannounced |
The honest limit: no Konami or PlayStation material explains a behavioural difference between the two colours. They are named as two things you can hook, nothing more.
The hidden Anchor rewards observation rather than luck. In the Sewer Reservoir - the room right after the first Mirror of Life save point - stand on the grate platform in the middle of the big background staircase and lash upward. The Anchor appears, and the route above leads to a chest with a developer message congratulating you. Step-by-step, including what to do once the Cestus is in hand, is on the Cestus page; the wider sweep is on the demo secrets list.
Wall jumps, hazards and the jump that feels wrong
Wall jumps are confirmed in the official hands-on, which describes steering Rose with them while swinging across "instant death spikes". The same report notes that the skeletons, zombies and bats there can be damaged by environmental hazards, which makes a hazard room a weapon.

Two explanations circulate for the demo's jump feel and neither is confirmed: a camera shift on jump and landing that makes the background appear to stutter, or a jump that only reaches full height when you hold the button, so muscle-memory taps land short. Konami has published no bug fix note either way. The test takes thirty seconds - hold the jump in a room with vertical camera movement, then tap it in the same room. If only the held jump clears the ledge, it is a hold-input habit, not a broken jump. Players who also report the stutter say a lower display refresh rate helps; that side lives in the FPS and settings page.
Chaos Shards: the gate the demo cannot open
Chaos Shards are solid blocks that seal routes until an Arcana lets you move through them. PlayStation's report is specific: Joan's Holy Light let the writer "traverse through previously solid Chaos Shards by holding down L2", and the same action deflected enemy attacks when the press was timed well. Holy Light is a key and a parry, not a damage spell.
You cannot test any of it in the demo. Joan of Arc is a full-game boss, so her Arcana cannot be sealed into the tarot deck during the opening chapter, and no other route through a Shard has been confirmed. The tarot progression around it - Works of Mercy, Blessings, Gifts - is on the Arcana system page.
What the kit will still be missing on October 15
Konami's demo page says demo save data transfers into the full game, due October 15, 2026. How much of your unlocked traversal carries has not been spelled out - check the demo save transfer rules before deleting anything.
| Traversal element | Demo status | Full game status |
|---|---|---|
| Arcana Whip grapple | After The Fallen | Confirmed |
| Golden and purple Anchors | Present | Confirmed |
| Hidden Anchor reveal | Present | Confirmed |
| Wall jump, dodge and slide | Present | Confirmed |
| Double jump | Not present | Hinted only - the hands-on cites level design clues, and direct questions to the developers got a wry grin, not an answer |
| Chaos Shard pass-through | Not obtainable | Confirmed, gated on Joan's Holy Light |
| Attack deflect on a timed press | Not obtainable | Confirmed, same source |
| Anchor count, whip move list, frame data | Not published | Not announced |
The pre-boss stretch is whip-free: the demo hands Rose the grapple only after The Fallen goes down, and the demo walkthrough is ordered around that switch.
Using the whip while you fight
Traversal and offence share one button. The published highlight is pairing the whip's instant attack with the Cestus gauntlets found in the demo - hit the enemy right after latching it and Rose throws an Uppercut that shatters the sewer zombies. It is the fastest damage loop in the opening chapter, and it works before launch day.
FAQ
Do I get the Arcana Whip in the Belmont's Curse demo? Yes - after defeating The Fallen in the sewers. Everything before that boss is played without a grapple.
Is it called Arcana Whip or Arcane Whip? Both spellings appear in published coverage. PlayStation uses Arcana Whip, Rock Paper Shotgun uses Arcane Whip, and Konami never officially names Rose's whip. Same grapple.
Why does my whip aim feel imprecise? Players report aiming that feels like eight-direction stick input, and no Konami material addresses it. Eight-direction whip aiming is a Super Castlevania IV trait from 1991, so the expectation may come from series muscle memory.
Is there a double jump? Not in the demo. The hands-on mentions design clues pointing to one later, and the developers' answer was a wry grin rather than a confirmation. Unannounced until Konami says otherwise.
What are Chaos Shards and can I walk through them in the demo? Shards are normally solid blocks that gate routes. Joan's Holy Light, held on L2, passes through them and deflects attacks when timed well. Joan is not in the demo, so this cannot be tested yet.
Will my whip and Anchor unlocks carry into the full game? Konami says demo saves transfer, on the same platform and account, with the demo save kept. How much progress carries is not published, so do not plan around a specific unlock surviving.
